About Ultrasound Guided Injections
This is a small interventional procedure that involves injecting a steroid into the appropriate area using ultrasound scanning to guide the needle. This injection is a therapeutic procedure, aiming to reduce musculo-skeletal pain relating to tendons, tendon sheaths or bursae.
Injections can benefit the following conditions:
• Osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, thumb, wrist or ankle
• Frozen shoulder
• Shoulder Impingement
• Shoulder and Knee bursitis
• Plantar Fasciitis (Foot)
• Tendinopathies (Foot)
• Carpal tunnel (wrist)
• Tennis elbow
• Golfers elbow
The injection contains a combination of local anaesthetic to temporarily numb the area and a corticosteroid, which acts as an anti-inflammatory. The advantage of using a guided technique allows the clinician to accurately locate and inject the intended target. Our in-house steroid injection therapy is carried out by a highly qualified Physiotherapist from Complete Physio. Emerson Fernandez is a Clinical Specialist in Diagnostic Ultrasound and Ultrasound Guided Injections. Find out more here. Emerson will carry out a full clinical assessment, ultrasound scan and ultrasound guided injection. Following your appointment, you will receive a letter detailing the diagnosis and any treatment carried out. This can then be used by your Physiotherapist to progress your treatment and management accordingly and, if necessary, it can be forwarded to an appropriate Consultant if required.
What happens afterwards?
You should feel absolutely fine.
You can normally drive home, depending on the site of injection, but it may be advisable to be driven by a companion.
